The Garda Commissioner says allegations raised by garda whistleblowers against colleagues are "quite disgusting". Martin Callinan says it is important that only two gardai, out of a force of 13,000, have raised concerns about corruption.

He says he will take legal advice about whether one whistleblower - who is a serving garda sergeant - should attend the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) next week.

He says the PAC is not the place to raise concerns but that it is important that so few officers are making the allegations.

It comes after a whistleblower alleged garda corruption by around 200 officers over the quashing of points for public figures, family and friends.

He has denied that high-profile people are given special treatment over their penalty points. Commissioner Callinan says everyone is treated equally when they ask to have a driving offence quashed.

He says the procedures around penalty points have been tightened up since an internal report into how offences can be written off.

But he says the system is fair and there is no special treatment for anybody.

PAC Chairman John McGuinness told the Committee earlier that the serving garda whistleblower - known only as 'McCabe' - is taking legal advice before deciding if he will appear before the Committee next week.

The Transport Minister Leo Varadkar told Newstalk Breakfast that while some gardaí were abusing discretionary powers, they must now be transparent and up-front about the process.
