Galways is on top of the world -at least when it comes to being friendly to tourists.

The city has been named as the world's most friendly city in a global ranking of 266 locations.

A survey by travel magazine Travel + Lesiure polled around 200,000 readers, asking them to rate cities based on a number of criteria, including warmth towards visitors.

One reader described Galways as full of “friendliest people they had every met, and another described how "the hospitality and the humor of Ireland’s people makes it a perfect destination.”

According to Travel + Leisure, Galway is known as the 'most Irish city' and "won readers’ hearts with its festive nature, lively population, and musicality."

Contrarily, the Russian capital of Moscow was ranked the most unfriendly.

Though placing well for landmarks and culture, it earned the dubious honour of last place for both friendliness and cuisine.

Other notably unfriendly destinations include Cannes, Marseilles and five US cities (though this may be the selection bias of the magazine's US readership).

The Russian capital was understood to suffer from a case of unhelpful locals mixed with a general 'aloofness.'
