The housing crisis is getting worse in Co Galway, with homeless figures at an all-time high.

COPE Galway worked with 652 adults and their 311 children affected by homelessness in Galway last year - with numbers on the increase for this year.

They have today published their annual report for 2014, and are proposing a local plan to tackle the housing crisis in Galway.

The report says: "While there was an increase in the numbers of families provided with emergency accommodation by COPE Galway - up from 19 in 2013 to 25 in 2014, what was more notable was the period of time these families remained in emergency accommodation".

It says this averaged at 60 nights in 2014, compared to 49 in 2013 "due to delays in accessing affordable rental accommodation".

It also says there is another notable trend of the 'hidden homeless'.

It says these are families who have lost their own housing and are involuntarily sharing with family and friends.

COPE says on December 1st they were aware of 17 families in Galway in this situation.

Martin O'Connor is the assistant CEO of COPE Galway.

He told Newstalk Breakfast there are several factors hindering housing for those that need it.
