The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has confirmed it is investigating a two-vehicle road traffic collision in Galway.
It happened on the N18, approximately 2kms on the Galway side of Ardrahan, shortly after 12.30am.
A 66-year-old male pedestrian was fatally injured when he was struck by a car.
The car also struck a parked garda car - injuring the two gardaí who were outside the car at the time.
The male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body taken to University Hospital Galway.
The two guards were taken to University Hospital Galway, with injuries described as non-life threatening.
The driver of the first car, a man in his 40s, was arrested at the scene and taken to Gort garda station. He has since been released.
It has been referred to GSOC for independent investigation under section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act - when it appears that 'the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person'.
GSOC investigators attended the scene, and are conducting an examination.
Gardaí are also asking witnesses to contact Gort garda station on 091-636-400, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line at 1800-666-111 or any garda station.
