Senator David Norris has withdrawn his controversial remarks over the Fine Gael TD Regina Doherty. Senator Norris made headlines yesterday after condemning the deputy for what he said was a slur against the Seanad.
Deputy Doherty made a formal complaint to the Leader of the Seanad but this morning Senator Norris tried to explain his remarks.
He said he apologised for any offence caused.
Yesterday the Senator described comments by Deputy Doherty on the Seanad as "the Regina Monologues" and said she was "talking through her fanny".
While Fine Gael TD Mary Mitchell-O'Connor says there is a 'boy culture' in Leinster House and that she was appalled by the language of Senator Norris.
She told Breakfast here on Newstalk that the "boys culture" around Leinster House must change.
Deputy Doherty said yesterday tha the remarks were upsetting and "sexist".
She said his comments have done nothing to strengthen his claim that the superior level of debate in the Seanad means the upper house is worth saving.
And speaking on his way into Government Buildings earlier this morning Minister Brendan Howlin said his department has been tasked with reforming the public service and the government cannot be immune from that.
