A woman has been charged with murdering her Irish boyfriend in Florida.

Wendy Hank is accused of shooting dead 39-year-old Darren Haverty in Holopaw near Orlando last Tuesday.

According to Florida Police, Hank claims that she shot Haverty after he approached her with a knife during a heated argument.

However, detectives at the crime scene have said that they discovered evidence which conflict with her statement of self-defence.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family of Mr Haverty.

He was originally from Greenhills in Dublin but is understood to have been living in America for some time.
