The producers of the Fireman Sam television series have 'unreservedly' apologised after an episode apparently depicted a character 'treading on' a page from the Koran.

An episode from 2014 has been accused of showing a page from the Islamic holy book being stepped on.

The scene shows a character entering a room and slipping on a piece of paper.

While it is unclear if the page he stepped on is from the Koran, a page from the religious book is then seen fluttering in the air.

BBC reports that the episode has been removed from Channel 5's online player.

In a statement, HIT Entertainment - the producers of the show - said: "It has been brought to our attention that in an episode of Fireman Sam (Series 9, Episode 7), an image of the Quran is briefly depicted. The page was intended to show illegible text and we deeply regret this error.

"We will no longer be working with the animation studio responsible for this mistake. In addition, we are taking immediate action to remove this episode from circulation and we are reviewing our content production procedures to ensure this never happens again."

They added that they "sincerely apologise for any distress or offense it may have caused".
