Another Fine Gael TD says he cannot give a firm commitment on the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill.
Longford-Westmeath TD James Bannon says that he has received written guarantees from the Health Minister that the legislation would not lead to 'abortion on demand.'
Four Fine Gael TDs who voted against the government earlier this week have all been expelled from the party.
Billy Timmins, Peter Matthews, Brian Walsh and Terence Flanagan said it was a matter of conscience for them to vote against the laws. They all objected to the inclusion of the suicide provision.
The Bill has moved a step closer to becoming law after passing its Committee stage last night. It will now be referred back to the Dáil for report and final stages next week.
During the Committee stage Health Minister James refused to delete the suicide clause and insisted the 14 year penalty for a woman procuring an abortion not covered in the laws had to be included.
Speaking to Midlands 103, Deputy Bannon says he is keeping his options open.
