One of the former Ministers involved in the setting up of Irish Water is calling for a voluntary redundancy scheme at the utility company.

Before the first bill for water charges land in homes, Fergus O'Dowd days there are savings to be made if staff numbers are cut.

He's rejected calls from the Mayor of Drogheda to consider his position within Fine Gael, saying he believes his voice for the people is strongest within the party.

Deputy O'Dowd says Scotland significantly reduced costs by cutting staff numbers:

Last week, Phil Hogan stated that despite Mr O'Dowd's criticism of communication at Irish Water, he was briefed on all issues concerning the company.

Mr Hogan stated: "The former Minister was briefed on every issue, every part of the way in relation to the establishment of Irish Water."
