Families who leave the welfare system to go back to work could be rewarded in next month's budget.

Tanaiste and Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, says she's 'very confident' about a proposal that would see them keep some benefits.

The proposed back-to-work scheme would allow a parent take up a low paid job and keep a welfare payment worth up to €30 per child a week.

Burton told the Irish Times that it is still being worked on but has the support of Fine Gael.

Meanwhile, Social Justice Ireland have stated that the working poor should benefit from tax cuts in Budget 2015.

The organisation carried out a recent study which show 1 in 6 adults living in poverty in this country has a job.

Social Justice Ireland says current Government tax proposals favour the rich as opposed to those earning under 36,800 euro a year.

The reports are emerging as the Labour and Fianna Fail parliamentary parties gather for their annual think-ins.

The wider budget will also be up for discussion when the party delegates meet in Wexford over the next two days but the weekend opinion poll will also be on their minds. It showed that support for Labour is just up 1.8% despite the change in party leadership.
