Construction of a new stand at the home of Shamrock Rovers will begin in the New Year.

South Dublin County Council say they will increase capacity at Tallaght Stadium to 8,000 upon completion bringing it in line with UEFA Category 4 standards.

Plans to expand the seating capacity of Tallaght stadium from 6,000 to 8,000 were first unveiled over a year ago by South Dublin County Council.

Rumours began circulating this week that the expansion has been shelved indefinitely, but South Dublin County Council rubbished that suggestion.

In a statement they confirmed to OffTheBall.com that they were pressing on with the plans to expand the stadium with the construction of the new stand and that a contractor has been appointed.

SDCC says works are due to commence in January with completion of the new stand expected towards the end of summer 2018.

The stadium will remain fully functional for the duration of the work, the only consequence of the construction will be a slight reduction in the number of car parking spaces where the contractors compound will be based.

The new single tier stand will be built in the south end of the ground and seat 2,195 spectators.
