The President, Acting Taoiseach and other ministers gathered at Arbour Hill in Dublin earlier today to mark 100 years since the Easter Rising.

President Micheal D Higgins and Taoiseach Enda Kenny were given full military honors as they arrived at the location where 14 of the 1916 leaders are buried.

The relatives of those who fought in the Easter Rising also attended the annual mass and commemoration ceremony at Arbour Hill.

Co-concelebrant Archbishop Diarmuid Martin recounted the experience of Fr Columbus Murphy - a Capuchin priest who visited Padraig Pearse while he was in prison in Arbour Hill in 1916:

Sinn Féin held its own commemoration outside the GPO this morning, with hundreds of people in attendance.

Elsewhere, Laochra - a celebration of music and dance to mark the anniversary - will take place at Croke Park after the Allianz Football League finals this afternoon.

The Reclaim the Vision of 1916 group is hosting a parade - starting at 2pm at Merrion Square - which will make its way to the GPO, where a free open-air concert will take place from 3pm.

Press Officer Betty Purcell says some "absolutely fabulous artists" will be taking part in today's event.

Musicians such as Don Baker, Damien Dempsey and Frances Black are due to perform, while there will also be contributions from the likes of Fionnula Flanagan and Panti Bliss.

Other events taking place around the country for the anniversary include flag raising ceremonies, a wreath laying ceremony in Limerick, and a 'fireworks extravaganza' in Sligo tonight.
