The Fianna Fáil's leader has compared the Government's approach to a hard border to Fawlty Towers.

Micheál Martin has accused the Government of having a private understanding that a hard border is now more likely if there's a no deal Brexit.

The conversation between Simon Coveney and Shane Ross suggested there will need to be checks on goods coming from the UK if there's no deal - in other words, some kind of border.

Board of new children's hospital says huge cost overruns 'disappointing' but insists 'process worked well'

Inflation and the cost of cables and fire sprinklers are being partly blamed for the huge cost overruns in building the National Children’s Hospital.

It emerged last month that the 470-bed hospital, which will be located on the St James's Hospital campus in Dublin, will now cost at least €1.4 billion - more than double the original price tag.

The National Paediatric Hospital Development Board is responsible for overseeing the project, and says the new facility be the finest in the world.

However, its members have today found themselves defending the costly project as they appear in front of the Oireachtas Health Committee.

Health Minister rejects opposition claims that he hasn't engaged with nursing unions

The Health Minister has rejected criticism that he has not engaged with nursing unions over their planned strikes.

Nurses and midwives are set to strike at the end of the month in a row over pay and conditions.

The Government is refusing to increase their pay as they say it will lead to pay claims from other public sector workers.

Labour, Sinn Féin, the Social Democrats and Independents4Change have now called for an independent review into the nursing profession to "properly lay out the scale of extra work and duties and how nurses could be compensated for this".
