Two more deaths and 219 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Ireland

Two more people have died from COVID-19 in the Republic of Ireland, bringing the total number of deaths here to six.

219 new coronavirus cases were also confirmed this evening, with 1,125 people now having tested positive here for the virus.

The patients who passed away were both male and located in the east of the country.

COVID-19: Opposition parties call for more severe lockdown of country

Opposition parties have called for a more severe lockdown of the country following a meeting this afternoon to discuss the next steps in tackling the spread of COVID-19.

Fianna Fáil's Micheál Martin and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald both said there need to be more immediate restrictions after large groups of people were seen visiting beaches and walking trails around the country yesterday.

However,  Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has suggested a full lockdown of the country is not the best way to combat the spread of coronavirus.

"A cruel, cruel illness" - Kerry patient opens up on battling COVID-19

A COVID-19 patient in County Kerry has opened up about his experience battling the illness this past week.

28-year-old Micheál Prendergast began showing symptoms shortly after returning home to Ireland from London last week.

On Newstalk Breakfast, he said he felt lucky to be able to sit up and speak given how sick he has been for the past week, adding that he was "so ill, it is almost indescribable”.

Young boy dies after dog attack in Dublin

A young boy has died after he was attacked by two dogs at his home in Tallaght yesterday.

The eight-year-old was taken to Tallaght Hospital with serious injuries after he was attacked by the rottweilers at around 4pm yesterday.

He was then moved to Crumlin Children’s Hospital; however, he passed away this morning.

British PM announces three-week lockdown to slow spread of coronavirus

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced severe new restrictions on movement as his government tries to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

In an address to the nation tonight, Mr Johnson said that people should stay at home for three weeks in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

People can now only leave home for shopping, for one form of exercise a day, for a medical appointment or to help a vulnerable person, with police having the power to fine those who flout the restrictions.
