Over 7,700 people have signed a petition calling to cancel Amanda Knox's sold-out show 'Cartwheel' at Edinburgh Fringe Festival. 

Ms Knox, was convicted and later acquitted for the murder and sexual assault of her flatmate, British student Meredith Kercher, in Italy in 2007.

Her new solo comedy show is described as "Amanda Knox is approaching forty, juggling motherhood, and facing an existential crisis: what if she peaked at wrongful imprisonment?"

Since the production's announcement, Ms Knox has received immense backlash on social media as well as from Kercher's family.

Knox defended the show in a statement on her Instagram saying it "[honours] Meredith Kercher’s memory and calls out the violence that was done to her and to me."

Speaking on The Claire Byrne Show Sky Arts and Entertainment Reporter, Bethany Minelle said the show is about Knox's "experiences that happened at the time of that trial and of her being jailed."

Knox will also use production to show "how she intends to explain that whole part of her life to her young daughter."

The case made global headlines as suspicion quickly fell on Knox and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito.

"Anyone can remember back to this case in 2007, it was massive at the time."

"Meredith's face is very well-known to all of us, but, when we start to think about what we know about her, I think we immediately realise that we actually know an awful lot more about Amanda Knox than we do Meredith Kercher."

The shows title Cartwheel, is referencing "a story that went about that she was seen doing a cartwheel outside the police station at the time the murder investigation was underway."

Ms Minelle said she was known to the press as being "slightly odd and acting in the way you may not expect the flatmate of a girl who has just been murdered to act".

The Kercher family recently broke their silence, with Meredith's sister Stephanie signing the petition and pleading with Knox to stop using her sister's murder and rape as "entertainment".

She also asked her "[How] would you feel if that was your sister?".

Also speaking on the The Claire Byrne Show, comedian Steve Cummins weighed in on the argument that cancelling this show would contradict Knox's right to freedom of expression.

"Her main excuse at the moment is 'how am I going to explain to my daughter what happened?'

"Well, you could have them read one of the two books, the first one you got a $4 million advance for, or you could show them the Netflix documentary.

"The fact she's marketing it as a comedy show is obscene to me. And the fact that it is sold out."

Mr Cummins continued:

"Imagine someone in your family gets murdered and then you hear two decades later that a comedian has a show about it. You would be absolutely horrified."

Cartwheel is still set to debut this evening, with the show running for 11 consecutive nights at the annual arts festival.
