Malaysian police say Nóra Quoirin died from prolonged hunger and stress 

An autopsy has revealed that schoolgirl Nóra Quoirin died as a result of prolonged hunger and stress.

The 15-year-old’s body was found in a forested area near the holiday resort she travelled to with her family after a ten-day search.

Sharp increase in demand for STEM subjects as CAO offers released

There has been a significant increase in demand for STEM subjects among this year’s graduating school students.

Tens of thousands of students are receiving their first CAO offers of the year this afternoon.

Nearly 44,000 have been offered Honours Degree level courses, while nearly 31,000 were offered Ordinary Degree or Higher Certificate level courses.

Two new MEPs have been paid nearly €225,000 in retirement lump-sums for their time in the Oireachtas.

According to details released under the Freedom of Information Act, more than 400 former TDs and senators have also been paid nearly €8.1m in pension payments this year.

Fine Gael’s former Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald and Fianna Fáil TD Billy Kelleher were both elected to the European Parliament in May after long stints in the Dáil.

Israel is to block two US Congresswomen from visiting the territory.

Democrats Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar had planned to visit the occupied West Bank, where Palestinian-American Ms Tlaib has family.

It is thought to relate to their support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which is working to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians.

SuperValu launches 100% compostable reusable shopping bags

Irish retailer SuperValu is launching 100% compostable and reusable shopping bags.

The new bags, which will be available from September 9th, will remove 2.5 million plastic bags from circulation.

The company says this is a first for any Irish retailer - being the first bag in Irish supermarkets that is both reusable and compostable.
