Status of new Maternity Hospital to be reviewed

A review is to be carried out into the status of the new National Maternity Hospital.

The chairman of St Vincent's Healthcare Group, Jimmy Menton, says it is due to "controversy and misinformation" regarding the project.

The Elm Park campus, where the new facility is to be built, is owned by religious group the Sisters of Charity.

EXCLUSIVE: Mater Hospital patients refused contraceptive pill

One of Ireland’s largest hospitals does not provide women with the contraceptive pill – based on its operational ethos as a Catholic institution.

In-patients at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin are not provided with access to the pill, regardless of whether they need it due to illness or are suffering without it.

While doctors are free to prescribe the medication, the hospital does not stock the pill at its on-site pharmacy and expects women to source their own from outside.

GLEN appoints Jillian van Turnhout to review organisation

The board of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN) has appointed Jillian van Turnhout to carry out a comprehensive review of the organisation.

It comes just a day after its chairperson, Kieran Rose, resigned.

Irish craft beer company secures major Spanish investment

Spanish beer maker Hijos de Rivera is set to take a 32% stake in The Carlow Brewing Company, the makers of O'Hara's beers.

The finances behind the deal have not been disclosed, the firm has been selling O'Hara beers in Spain for two years.
