Man dies after falling from the Cliffs of Moher

A young man has died after falling from the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare.

Gardaí said the alarm was raised just after 3pm after someone was seen falling from the cliff edge.

The body of the man, aged in his 20s, was recovered from the water by the Coast Guard based at Doolin.

It is believed the man was from overseas and was studying in Ireland.

Young mother found dead in Donegal home named as Jasmine McMonagle

A woman who was found dead in her Donegal home in the early hours of this morning has been named as Jasmine McMonagle.

The 27-year-old mother-of-two's body was found at the Forest Park Estate in Killygordon.

A Garda technical team have been examining the scene and a man in his 20s is being questioned at Letterkenny Garda Station in connection with the investigation.

A postmortem is currently underway. 

HSE urges public to get vaccinated after hundreds are diagnosed with swine flu

The HSE is warning that a number of people have already died as swine flu returns to Ireland.

The health service said over 200 people have been diagnosed with the strain – known as H1N1 – over the past six to eight weeks.

It has hit Ireland a number of times since the Swine Flu Pandemic a decade ago – however, the flu vaccine has been updated and the public as a whole has grown more accustomed to it.

Dr Kevin Kelleher, assistant national director of public health at the HSE, said the best way to protect against all forms of flu is to get the vaccine. 

Irish embassy seeking access to man arrested in Russia on suspicion of spying

The Irish embassy in Russia has requested consular access to a man detained in Moscow after being accused of spying. 

Paul Whelan was detained on Friday, December 28th.

Described by Russian authorities as a US citizen, the 48-year-old is accused of being caught while on a 'spy mission'.

Russian news agency TASS has reported that a criminal investigation has been opened against him on espionage charges.

Trump threatens to shut down US Government for 'months or even years' over wall funding

The US President has threatened to shut down the government for ‘months or even years’ as the dispute over funding for his planned border wall with Mexico continues.

President Donald Trump met with Democrats Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and other congressional leaders this afternoon in an attempt to bring the impasse to a close.

The US government is now approaching its third week of partial shutdown over the funding.

President Trump has demanded $5bn (€4.39bn) of government money for the project, which he originally claimed would be funded by Mexico, but the Democrats have refused to authorise the spending.
