Ireland v Italy rugby match won't go ahead next week, IRFU confirms

Next week's Ireland v Italy rugby match has been called off over coronavirus fears, the IRFU has confirmed.

They're now hoping to reschedule the game.

It follows a meeting between the organisation and the Health Minister Simon Harris.

Health officials had yesterday recommend that the match - which was scheduled to take place at the Aviva Stadium on March 7th - be cancelled as it was 'too high risk' due to the coronavirus outbreak in northern Italy.

The Garda Commissioner says he has "no regrets" over his comments linking the Provisional Army Council to Sinn Féin.

Last week, Drew Harris said An Garda Síochána doesn't differ from the PSNI view that a provisional army council oversees both Sinn Féin and the IRA.

Speaking after a meeting with the Policing Authority this evening, Drew Harris said he never engages in political interference and that his comments "require no clarification".

Woman appears in court charged with murder of Gareth Kelly in Dublin

A woman has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Dublin yesterday morning.

Gareth Kelly died after being stabbed in a housing estate in Kingswood as he tried to start his car to go to work.

38-year-old Christina Anderson of Brownsbarn Wood estate in Kingswood sat with her head down during today's hearing, which lasted around five minutes.

Fine Gael will hold one-day policy discussions with Fianna Fáil and the Green Party next week.

However, Leo Varadkar has told his TDs the party's position is that it would prefer to be in opposition in the next Dáil.

Mr Varadkar told his parliamentary party there is not a basis at the moment to appoint a negotiating team to look at government formation, but he has agreed to one-day policy discussions with Fianna Fáil and the Green Party.

Operation to remove barrels from grounded ship completed

An operation to remove barrels from a ship which ran aground off the Cork cost has been completed.

The MV Alta ran aground about two kilometres west of Ballycotton almost two weeks ago.

The council confirmed on Wednesday that an operation to remove the oil and other possible contaminants - which had been collected into barrels - was successfully completed.

62 full barrels and 33 empty barrels have now been airlifted by helicopter from the wreck.
