FAI insists State funds spent “appropriately”

The Football Association of Ireland has insisted that it spent all the State funds it received from Sport Ireland “appropriately and as intended.”

It comes after the findings of a forensic audit of the association’s accounts were referred to the Gardaí.

The Sports Minister Shane Ross said he had received the report but had received legal advice warning him against publishing or commenting on it as it had been referred to An Garda Síochána by Sport Ireland.

He said he had also been advised not to release it to the Oireachtas Sports Committee.

Farmers leave Dublin after 24-hour protest

Farmers have left the St Stephen's Green area of Dublin city centre following a protest that caused traffic chaos for over 24 hours.

However, they are warning they'll return to disrupt Dublin streets if action isn't taken to address the problems in the sector.

The protesters are also demanding that injunctions against two farmers as a result of the meat blockades be dropped.

The protest was organised by a number of individual farmers.

Charge against Al Porter dropped

The Director of Public Prosecutions has decided not to pursue a charge of sexual assault against Al Porter.

The well-known entertainer was accused of sexually assaulting a young man in a Dublin venue three years ago.

An order prohibiting the media from identifying the 26-year-old was lifted after the judge struck out the case this afternoon.

Mr Porter, whose real name is Alan Kavanagh, made a brief statement outside court afterwards.

Murphy to face second no-confidence motion

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy will face a no confidence motion in the Dáil next week.

The Social Democrats have confirmed they will table a vote on the embattled Minister, with Minister Murphy himself dismissing the motion as a 'stunt'.

However, Fianna Fáil has confirmed it will not support the motion.

Minister Murphy previously survived a no confidence motion from Sinn Féin in September 2018.

Clive James dies aged 80

Clive James - the poet, critic and broadcaster - has died at the age of 80 following a long illness.

His agents said the Australian-born writer died at his home in Cambridge on Sunday.

A private funeral attended by his family and close friends took place in the chapel at Pembroke College in Cambridge today.

In a statement, United Agents said: "Clive died almost ten years after his first terminal diagnosis, and one month after he laid down his pen for the last time.
