Apple tax: Dáil passes motion to appeal €13bn ruling

The Dáil has passed a motion to appeal the European Commission ruling ordering Apple to pay Ireland up to €13 billion in back taxes.

Ireland will now challenge the decision in the European Courts of Justice, in a process that could take several years.

TDs backed the government motion by 93 votes to 36 after a 10-hour debate.

Dublin Bus strike: Shane Ross does not plan to intervene in dispute

Minister for Transport Shane Ross has ruled out intervening in the Dublin Bus dispute ahead of a planned strike by drivers. 

All bus services stopped running at 9pm tonight before industrial action officially begins at midnight.

Mr Ross also said it would be illegal to allow commuters to use bus lanes over the course of the 48-hour strike.

Ex-NAMA adviser accused of accepting £40,000 cash payment in car park

Businessman Frank Cushnahan has been secretly recorded taking a £40,000 cash payment from a NAMA borrower, according to a BBC investigation.

The audio was allegedly taped in a hospital car park in 2012, when Mr Cushnahan was still a member of NAMA’s Northern Ireland advisory committee.

A BBC Spotlight programme broadcast last night claimed that the money was given to him by Northern Irish property developer John Miskelly.

John Halligan threatens to resign over Waterford hospital controversy

A junior minister has threatened to resign over an independent report that recommends moving some hospital services from his home city.

Talks between John Halligan and Minister for Health Simon Harris are continuing this evening. 

It comes after a review found that a high-tech cardiac unit could be transferred from Waterford University Hospital to Cork.
