Coveney expresses “grave concern” over Trump Middle East plan

The Tánaiste has expressed “grave concern” over the Middle East ‘peace plan’ announced by the US and Israel today.

Standing alongside the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House this afternoon, President Donald Trump claimed the proposals offered a “win-win opportunity” for both sides to the protracted conflict.

There were no Palestinian representatives at the announcement – and Palestinian leaders have already rejected the plan as a “plot to liquidate the Palestinian cause.”

Mr Coveney said: “We will study the plan in more detail but our initial response is one of grave concern that it fails to achieve the balance and equality of esteem necessary to gain the support of both sides to the conflict and the international community.”

Catherine Noone truly sorry for describing Varadkar as ‘autistic’

A Fine Gael Senator has said she 'unequivocally apologises' for describing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar as 'autistic'.

The remarks by Catherine Noone were reported by TheTimes.ie while she was canvassing in Dublin.

She made the comments after being asked about Mr Varadkar's performance in last week's Virgin Media head-to-head debate.

Mr Varadkar has been criticised for appearing to lack empathy on issues such as health and the homelessness crisis.

Adrian Donohoe murder trial opens

A man has gone on trial accused of murdering Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe in what was described as a “slick and highly-organised operation.”

Aaron Brady from New Road in Crossmaglen, County Armagh has pleaded not guilty to capital murder and robbery at a credit union in County Louth in 2013.

Opening his case today, prosecuting barrister Brendan Grehan said Detective Adrian Donohoe was shot dead outside Lordship Credit Union while on armed escort duty on a cold and wet night on January 25th 2013.

He was one of two armed detectives assigned to a convoy for the delivery of takings from several credit unions in the Carlingford Peninsula.

Coronavirus death toll rises

China has said 106 people have now died due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak - with more 4,515 confirmed cases across the country.

Both numbers rose dramatically in the latest update from the country's National Health Commission, with most of those affected hailing from the city of Wuhan - the epicentre of the outbreak.

Uncertainty remains over how dangerous the virus is and how easily it spreads between humans, but cases have been confirmed in countries across Asia, North America and Europe - most recently Germany.

Thailand and Hong Kong have reported eight cases each, there are five each in the US, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore and Macau, four in South Korea, Japan and Malaysia, three in France, and two in Vietnam and Canada.
