Murder-suicide suspected after Cavan family are found dead in house

Gardaí say the deaths of a family of five in Cavan may have been caused by a murder-suicide.

The deceased have been named locally as primary school deputy principal Alan Hawe, who was in his 40s; his wife, Clodagh, who was in her 30s and also a teacher; and their three sons.

Their bodies were found in a house at Oakdene Downs in Barconey, near Ballyjamesduff, this morning.

Willy Wonka star Gene Wilder dies aged 83

Comedy legend Gene Wilder, who starred in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, has died at the age of 83.

The actor, who also tickled cinema-goers in Young Frankenstein, The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Stir Crazy, passed away on Sunday night in Stamford, Connecticut.

His nephew said the film legend had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease-related complications.

Pat Hickey to be freed from prison and placed under house arrest

A Brazilian judge has recommended that Pat Hickey be placed under house arrest.

The president of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) was arrested on August 17th in connection with the alleged illegal resale of Rio 2016 tickets. He denies any wrongdoing. 

Judge Fernando Antonio de Almeida cited concerns over the 71-year-old's health in court documents agreeing to grant him bail.

Disability centre resident 'not given adequate food' for over 18 hours

A resident at a disability centre in Cork was not provided with adequate food and nutrition for over 18 hours in June, according to health inspectors.

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) also identified issues with the reporting of abuse allegations and administration of medicines at St Raphael’s Campus in Youghal.

The facility was one of a number of HSE-run disability centres where inspectors found evidence of “very poor” management and oversight.

Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin has announced she is splitting from her husband, former New York congressman Anthony Weiner, following a new sexting revelation.

The announcement follows a New York Post report on Sunday night that Mr Weiner, 51, had shared sexually explicit messages with another woman.

The Democrat resigned from the House of Representatives in 2011 after mistakenly tweeting an explicit image of himself that was intended as a direct message.
