Emergency access to Rent Supplement for victims of domestic violence has been extended until the end of the year.

It means people trying to leave an abusive situation can access the support payment without a means test if they have been referred by Tusla or a Tusla-funded service provider.

Since August last year 49 victims of domestic abuse have been offered access to the payment.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys told Newstalk that it is important people know they can access support:

“What they can get is financial assistant to help them pay their rent if they have to move out of their house for the purposes of being abused or having suffered domestic violence,” she said.

“The Department of Social Protection will help them pay their rent until they get suitable housing or maybe apply to the local authority.”

The scheme, originally introduced in response to COVID-19, was due to expire this week but has now been extended until the end of this year.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys is reminding anyone facing abuse in the home that there are ways out.

“Well, if they are in a difficult situation the first thing I would say to them is go to Tusla or go to some of the support agencies that are available there to help people who are victims of domestic violence,” she said.

“They will then give them advice and advise them of the supports that are available.

“One of those supports is that the Department of Social Protection will help to pay the rent.”

If you or someone you know is suffering due to domestic violence, you can contact the Women’s Aid 24-hour helpline on 1800 241 900.
