The Eiffel Tower has been closed following a terror alert.

Authorities were alerted when a man with 'a large backback' was seen ascending the popular tourist attraction.

Anti-terror police and a helicopter arrived soon after, and the tower has been closed off, with tourists being asked to stay away from the landmark for the rest of the day.

According to Reuters, security has been stepped up at the tower since the attack on the office of satirical magazine Chalie Hebdo in January.
