Winter Lights returns to 17 locations across Dublin city from December 1st, with new artwork commissioned for four of the displays this year.

Dublin City Council Culture Company says it hopes the projections and lighting will bring "some hope and cheer to what has been a very difficult year."

The company has worked with groups and communities across the city to create the artworks.

These will light up Samuel Beckett Bridge, Civic Office Wood Quay, The Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, City Hall and the Mater Hospital for the full month of December.

The four artworks are:

  • 'Keep on Moving' by Richmond Barracks Over-55s Movement Group for the Samuel Beckett Bridge: a bespoke four-minute dance around the themes of strength, resilience and fun, featuring several styles of dance and the groups’ very own haka
  • 'Home Truths Stories from The Croft and Hollybrook Lodge’ care homes for Dublin City Hall is a four-minute storied animation of reminiscences from residents of their childhoods, their life experiences, the challenges they face with COVID-19, and their messages of hope
  • 'HACE' (Henrietta Street Adult & Community Education) worked with artist Helen Barry to create ‘The Heart of Dublin’ for the Civic Offices at Woodquay: a three minute shadow-puppetry-based animation on Christmas and Dublin
  • And The National Neighbourhood created ‘Look Out For The Light’ for the Mater Hospital - a four-minute digital animation celebrating the power of hope, community, positivity and togetherness

Iseult Byrne, Dublin City Council Culture Company CEO, said: "2020 has been a difficult year for many, but our work with communities throughout the year and this project specifically is a wonderful opportunity to include the voices of the people of Dublin in a significant way, to shine a light on them, their ideas and their creativity.
