Dublin man charged with stealing almost €1m from local credit union

A Dublin man has appeared in court charged with stealing almost €1m from his local credit union.

Paul O'Brien of Valley Park Road in Finglas is also accused of falsifying loan documents.

Mr O'Brien (50) appeared before Blanchardstown District Court this morning.

He is charged with stealing just over €943,000 from Finglas Credit Union between February 2005 and January of this year.

During that time, he allegedly stole amounts as small as €100, but he is also accused of stealing much larger amounts - €40,000 is the highest figure on a lengthy charge sheet.

Aside from the various thefts, Mr O'Brien was also charged with falsifying loan documents for a number of named individuals.

He is facing trial before Dublin Circuit Criminal Court and there was no objection to bail during his brief appearance today.

He is due back in court in December for service of the book of evidence.
