The FBI has executed a search warrant at former US President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

A senior US official said the FBI spent the “majority of the day” at the property in Palm Beach Florida.

The search comes as the US Justice Department investigates Trump over the removal and destruction of official White House records after his presidency ended.

Earlier this year, 15 boxes of presidential records were returned to the US National Archives, including letters and correspondence form world leaders including Kim Jog Un.

Reports suggested some of the documents carried the highest levels of classification – meaning only a small number of officials have clearance to view them.

It is believed today’s search at Mar-a-Lago came after the FBI told a judge it believed the former president was holding further documents.

A separate investigation into the January 2021 Capitol Riot is also ongoing alongside an investigation into alleged attempts to undo the results of the 2020 election.

It was Trump who initially revealed the search operation at his home.

“These are dark times for our nation as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege – raided and occupied by a large group of FBI agents," he said in a statement.

“Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before.

“After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate.

“It is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by radical left Democrats who desperately don't want me to run for President in 2024 - especially based on recent polls - and who will likewise do anything to stop Republicans and conservatives in the upcoming Midterm Elections.”

A Government official rejected Trump’s statement noting that the use of the word ‘raid’ is not appropriate.

The official said the FBI was ‘not breaking down doors here’ and described the operation as an orderly execution of a search warrant.
