A new campaign will see 116 dogs get microchipped every day next month.
Dogs Trust Ireland has launched details of their nationwide microchipping awareness campaign.
It will coincide with new Government legislation which will come into effect from this September, meaning all puppies must be microchipped and registered on an approved database before they are moved from their birth home.
Adult dogs will have until March 31st 2016 to be microchipped - and owners must obtain a certificate to prove the dog has been chipped.
Dog owners can avail of free microchipping at participating veterinary practices nationwide, and at the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Dublin.
Mark Beazley, executive director at Dogs Trust Ireland, said: "Under the new law, you will be required to not only have your dog microchipped, but to ensure your details as the owner are up to date with a Government approved database".
"Dog owners must ensure the correct data for their dog is registered or their microchip is essentially useless".
Two free microchipping clinics will take place at the Dogs Trust, Ashbourne Road, Finglas in Dublin 11 on September 5th and 19th.
The charity is also offering free chipping through a network of veterinary practices all around Ireland.
