The Dáil has begun debating new laws to ban smoking in cars where children are present.
The bill is due to go through the Dáil in the coming weeks, and could be in place by Christmas.
Children's minister James Reilly said TDs have a duty to protect children from the 'reckless' behaviour of adults.
“We owe a duty of care to children. As a Minister for Children I owe a particular duty of care to children, and we must protect children from irresponsible adults who would expose them to such a serious risk to their health,” Minister Reilly said.
Minister Reilly told the Dail offenders could face a fine up to €1000.
Reilly says TDs should not be afraid of any lobbying from the tobacco industry:
“For five decades the tobacco industry deliberately concealed facts about dangers of smoking. They disputed any link between second hand smoke and poor health. I ask you, members of this house, not to allow for any manipulation of the truth,” the Minister added.
The bill was first introduced into the Seanad in April 2012 but took two years to pass.
