The Data Protection Commission has launched separate inquiries into Tinder and Google.

Tinder is the popular dating app owned by the IAC / Match Group (MTCH Technology Services Ltd).

The DPC investigation will focus on the processing of Tinder users' personal data and the company's compliance with its obligations to users' GDPR requests.

It comes in the wake of concerns raised by Irish and other EU users.

In a statement, the Commission said: "The Inquiry of the DPC will set out to establish whether the company has a legal basis for the ongoing processing of its users’ personal data and whether it meets its obligations as a data controller with regard to transparency and its compliance with data subject right’s requests."

Separately, a statutory inquiry has been launched into Google's processing of location data and the transparency surrounding the data processing.

The DPC says they've received 'a number of complaints' from consumer organisations across the EU regarding the tech giant's processing of location data.

The Commission explained: "The issues raised within the concerns relate to the legality of Google’s processing of location data and the transparency surrounding that processing."

An inquiry will now look into whether the company has a "valid legal basis" for the processing of users' data.

It's one of a number of DPC inquiries that have been launched into Google - including one launched last year focusing on the company's processing of users' personal data for advertising.

Under EU and GDPR rules, the DPC here is considered the main regulator for international firms who have European headquarters in Ireland.
