Stephen Power from the Village Butchers in Piltown, Co Kilkenny said people can save more by only buying what they need.

"A full turkey can be fairly expensive and it would feed a lot of people; so if you don't have too many people you can get the boned and rolled turkey," he said.

"You can say you want 3lbs or 4lbs and that'd easily feed six or seven people.

"The boned and rolled would be much cheaper if you were trying to save".

Mr Power said a full turkey could cost you between €50 to €90, whereas 3lbs or 4lbs of boned and rolled breast may only set you back as much as €30.

"Boned and rolled you can just get the turkey breast, so you'd have no leg meat in it," he said.

"There's no waste in it, you don't have to try and get rid of the bones or anything like that after.

"Really what we'd be saying to people is just get what you need.

"Often you'll have some left over, and there's where the costs can be cut.

"It is hard to judge, I suppose, how much you'd exactly need and you don't want to have too little.

"People do tend to go overboard and have too much," he added.

Mr Power said boned and rolled ham is also much easier to cook and cut.
