But it can't be possible, as you've had your three meals a day with snacks on the side (and snacks on the side of the snacks).

Rather than raid through your cupboards some more why not follow some easy tips to keep your hunger under control and, while you're at it, perhaps shed a few pounds as you go.

As is the case often your hunger may be mistaken for thirst. Before assuming you want food try drinking a pint of water and see if your cravings are still gnawing away shortly after. Keeping a full bottle of the clear stuff in your bag while you're out will make a remarkable difference to your eating habits.

Women are recommended to gulp down 1.6 litres a day, while men should drink around 2.0 litres, so every sip counts. It may seem like a massive amount but this does count other beverages such as tea, coffee and even fruit juices, but of course water alone is the most effective.

There is also the distraction method to overcome your munchies. Contrary to the popular belief, exercising in fact decreases your appetite as well as boosting your adrenaline. So even if you're following the above advice adding a work out to the equation will only make you less hungry!

And rather than cutting down your meal size dramatically, add half a grapefruit to each meal. This colourful fruit will help regulate your metabolism and blood sugar, causing you to get fuller quicker. No more second helpings with this tip!

If these methods haven't worked and you're still reaching for an extra between lunch and dinner, don't panic. Instead of going for the old reliable food filler why not try sipping on a hot cup of tea or a herbal concoction? It will hopefully be just enough to keep you going, and why not chuck in a cheeky grapefruit on the side? Nuts are also great at filling you up and just a small handful is enough to achieve this. Be careful though, as they are oil-based and any more than a few a day may present opposite results.

Now to address the sweet yearnings. A piece of good news is that you needn't eat a treat to feel its effects. It has been proven that by simply smelling food or scented candles throughout the day can reduce a person's calorie intake, the favourites include vanilla and banana.

Lastly, don't feel like you need to skip breakfast. Eating the right stuff in the morning - such as porridge - can keep you going right up until lunch and swapping bigger meals for more regular smaller portions is another way to kick your appetite into shape.
