COVID hospitalisations and ICU admissions are beginning to stabilise, according to the Chief Medical Officer.

Yesterday, there were 335 coronavirus patients in Irish hospitals – a fall of just under 50 in the past two days.

Meanwhile, there were 56 in intensive care – down from 59 on Monday.

Dr Holohan said the country’s overall COVID rate is also falling – noting that the five-day moving average yesterday was 1,407, which is down more than 200 on last week.

"Incidence of COVID-19 in adolescents and young adults is falling significantly, and we are seeing early encouraging signs that the rate of infection plateauing in children of school going age,” said Dr Holohan.

"NPHET will continue to monitor this trend over the coming weeks."

The CMO noted that vaccination still offered the best protection against the “most severe effects of COVID-19 including hospitalisation and death” and encouraged anyone who has yet to get the jab, to do so.

According to the latest Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) data, 20.5% of Ireland’s cases over the past two weeks were in Children under the age of 12.

When those aged 13 to 18 are added in, the data shows that children and teenagers now make up just under one third of new cases.

On Newstalk Breakfast yesterday, UCD Professor Jack Lambert said the data proves that children are a source of transmission and called for stricter mitigation measures in schools.

Meanwhile, health officials are considering relaxing self-isolation rules for schoolchildren – with around 16,000 children currently out of school after being identified as close contacts.

On The Hard Shoulder yesterday a school principal warned that the current system for combating COVID was ‘a firefight and a hope’.
