In recognition of the difficulties faced by young people in Spain, the judge in Cádiz said the father, who has been been paying child support to his daughter for 24 years, will have to continue until she finishes her university studies.
The man separated from his daughter’s mother in 1990, and had appealed to the court to stop making his monthly child payments.
But the judge ruled against him, saying that his daughter was relying on his financial support to complete her academic work. The judge said that the poor economy in Spain, and the fact that the man was in a strong financial situation, meant he should continue to give financial assistance to his daughter for another two years.
The judge also said that the woman was not entitled to any unemployment benefit, given her status as a student.
Speaking to the 20 Minutos newspaper, a lawyer for the father said he was very disappointed with the judge’s decsion
"These rulings are surprising, crazy and not normal. It's absurd. The normal thing is that the judge would have said that's enough freeloading," the lawyer said.
