Cork woman sent to trial for young son's murder

A Co. Cork mother charged with murdering her 8-year-old son has been sent forward for trial.

42-year old Diane Ward of Harrison Place in Charleville is accused of murdering her son Anthony at their home on September 3rd last.

Superintendent Pat McCarthy of Mallow garda station served the book of evidence at Limerick District Court.

Ms. Ward appeared before the court today via video link.

She confirmed her name and that she could hear proceedings.

Defence witnesses

She thanked the judge after he granted an application for a junior and senior counsel to represent her at her trial.

Ms. Ward also agreed to give gardai the contact details of any defence witnesses she may rely on within 14 days.

She was remanded in continuing custody to appear for trial at the present sittings of the Central Criminal Court.

The 8-year-old boy was found dead in his home in Charleville in early September and his mother was charged with his murder.

A post mortem examination showed he died as a result of asphyxiation.
