The initial police response to the Co Tyrone disco tragedy will be scrutinised by the North's Police Ombudsman.

Three teenagers lost their lives in a crush while queuing to get into the Greenvale Hotel in Cookstown on St Patrick's night.

17-year-old Lauren Bullock died at the scene, while Morgan Barnard, also aged 17, and 16-year-old Connor Currie died after being brought to hospital.

A PSNI investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The force now says that it's "right and proper that the actions of all those involved" are examined.

In a statement today, the PSNI said the first officers arrived at the hotel grounds shortly after receiving a 999 report.

The statement explains: "Following their initial assessment [the officers] made attempts to establish more detail and information about what was happening and subsequently withdrew to await further police support.

"When the first ambulance arrived police moved forward in support of them."

According to the PSNI, the "timing and nature of police actions" during the initial response now need further investigation.

The statement adds: "The Chief Constable has therefore decided that the initial police response should be subject to independent scrutiny and it is in the public interest to refer the circumstances and the nature of the actions of the first officers arriving at the scene to the Police Ombudsman."

Families of the victims have been informed of the development.

The force adds that it will work with the ombudsman to "support whatever action he undertakes".
