HSE says 200 patients have been contacted in relation to alert surrounding chemotherapy drug

The HSE says around 200 patients have been contacted in relation to an alert surrounding a chemotherapy drug.

A manufacturing machine was found to be contaminated with bacteria and a number of batches of the drug, manufactured between September 29th and October 12th, were recalled as a precaution.

The HSE has apologised to the patients and says there is no indication from the company at this time that any drug has been affected.

They say that patients are being contacted on a precautionary basis.

The statement adds that if "any of these patients experience any unexpected symptoms differing from what they normally experience after treatment, they are being advised to attend at or/and contact their treating hospital".

The Irish Cancer Society says the HSE has taken appropriate measures in dealing with the alert.

The society is encouraging anybody feeling anxiety as a result of the alert to contact their Nurseline on Freephone 1800-200-700 to speak to a nurse.
