The Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has welcomed a breakthrough in peace talks between the Colombian government and the FARC rebels that are taking place in Havana.

The two parties signed a commitment setting groundwork for a final deal within six months.

"I want to warmly welcome the agreement reached on justice issues between the Colombian government and FARC negotiators in negotiations in Havana" he said.

"The image of the Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and the FARC leader Rodrigo Londono, known as Timochenko, shaking hands was hugely important and a historic moment for Colombia".

The agreement is to establish peace tribunals and a reconciliation commission to provide justice for victims.

An estimated 220,000 people have died and more than five million internally displaced in the conflict with began in the 1960s.

Sinn Féin says it has long supported the peace talks.

Since 2012 Paul Maskey, Martin McGuinness and Conor Murphy have all visited Colombia.

Mr Murphy also visited Havana in 2013 to meet the negotiators - and Gerry Kelly spoke to negotiators when they travelled to Belfast.

Mr Adams will be in Cuba next week, and expects to meet with negotiators.
