With pubs across the country remaining closed for now, the owners of one bar in Co Meath have come up with a novel way to deliver beer to some of their customers.

The current roadmap for the easing of restrictions suggests pubs could reopen in August - although vintners' groups have begun putting forward plans which they say would allow many pubs to reopen with strict social distancing measures in place.

However, the owners of McKeever's Bar near Navan have started using drones to drop off a few free drinks to some of the locals.

Avril McKeever spoke to Newstalk Breakfast about how her family has been using drones to 'pass around a few drinks and have a little laugh' during the current crisis.

She explained: “We were sitting in the garden here one day… my nephew was taking photographs of the house.

"I just said ‘I wonder would that hold a few bottles of Heineken or something?’"

The service isn’t ‘good enough yet’ to deliver pints - but a few customers are having some bottles delivered straight to their homes.

For the owners of McKeever's, drone delivery isn’t a way for their business to thrive during the current crisis - and instead it’s about ‘keeping the craic going’.

Avril explained: “It’s a bit of fun. Once this goes away, [everyone] can get back together… [I’ll be] happy."

She added that they have "great customers and a great neighbourhood" - and that the most important thing is for all of them to be safe and well during the current crisis.
