A Citizens Assembly on how to make Ireland a global leader in the fight against Climate Change is underway in Dublin.

Chairperson Mary Laffoy and the 99 Citizen members are hearing presentations today before a vote tomorrow.

At its last meeting, members were given key facts about the impact of climate change and the energy sector.

This morning's first presentations are on Transport Policy – with further talks on agriculture due later on today.

Voting will take place by secret ballot tomorrow.

‘Smart farming’ is just one area that will be examined during today’s presentations.

Longford farmer Andrew McHugh opened up his farm to a team of experts who found ways to improve production - including a chart to measure how breeding can improve profits:

“There are things you are good at and there are things you are not so good at,” he said.

“So I found people coming in looking at my farm, looking at all the different areas on my farms were able to pick out the bits that I wasn’t good at and to advise me on how to change things and how to improve things.

“I found it a huge benefit.”

The Assembly has received some 1,200 submissions on climate change from members of the public.

There will also be presentations on the efforts that other countries - including Denmark and Scotland - are making to tackle climate change.

The outcome of tomorrow’s ballot will be submitted to the houses of the Oireachtas for further consideration.
