A Chinese student who travelled from Wuhan to Waterford is in self-isolation as a precautionary measure, amid continuing concerns over the coronavirus outbreak in China.

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) has confirmed that the student is not ill and not showing any symptoms of the coronavirus.

However, as a precaution, he is staying in isolation in his accommodation in Waterford City.

The student arrived in Waterford yesterday but left Wuhan some days ago - before the city was effectively shut down.

In a statement, WIT said they have been in touch with the HSE and are being directed by them.

It comes as officials in China continue their efforts to contain the virus.

There are now more than 2,700 cases, with 80 people confirmed dead.

The director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO) is preparing to meet Chinese officials in Beijing today to discuss the deadly outbreak and efforts to limit its spread.

Authorities in China have extended the current public holiday until Sunday as they work to contain the outbreak.

While cases have been confirmed outside of China in several countries - including Australia, France, Japan, Malaysia, the US and Vietnam - there have been no cases reported in Ireland so far.

The virus originated in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in Hubei late last year and has spread to Chinese cities including Beijing.

Over the weekend, China warned that the ability of the coronavirus to spread is getting stronger.

The authorities said little is known about the new virus and are unclear on the risks posed by it mutating.
