A firefighter who attended the scene of a fatal fire at a halting site in south Dublin has told an inquest of how he discovered a baby in a burning caravan
He told the jury that he believed the six-month-old girl was already dead when he carried her out.
Ray Martin was one of the first firefighters to attend the scene of the fire at Glenamuck halting site in Carrickmines in the early hours of October 10th 2015.
He said he was greeted by a man who was begging him to help those inside a burning caravan.
He said they attacked the fire from the right hand side, before going to a second cabin that had also caught fire.
A woman told him there was a baby inside the second unit and he went in.
Mr Martin said there was a lot of thick black smoke in the bedroom, where he found six-month-old baby Mary Connors lying at the foot of the bed.
He said he picked her up and cradled her into him.
He said there were no obvious signs of life and his priority was to get her out.
She was later pronounced dead in hospital.
Nine others, including her parents and two young brothers, also died in the fire.
The inquest continues.
