As the bank holiday approaches, you should know to expect an increase in road safety warnings - but you might find them in the strangest places.

The Irish Independent reports on this latest road safety campaign, which ambushed people looking to buy a car online.

An ad for a 2003 Subaru WRX Impreza, listed for the suspiciously low price of €3,000, was put on DoneDeal alongside a contact number. But instead of reaching the seller, callers heard a chilling warning from a driver who claimed to have accidentally killed a six-year-old girl while driving recklessly.

“If you’re calling about the car, yes I still have it for sale. I have it about six months. It’s quick, so quick I didn’t even see her. She was only six years old for God’s sake. Make me an offer and take it away. I can’t stand looking at it anymore. Just don’t drive like I did.”

The message then closed with: ”Brought to you by Mayo County Council as part of a road safety campaign.”

The paper claims that over 150 of the callers were undeterred by the seller’s story, leaving contact details after the beep, with one caller saying, “He didn’t crash the car, he just hit a girl.”

The Road Safety Authority of Ireland and An Garda Siochana have appealed for drivers to slow down this bank holiday weekend. For the past two years, the June bank holiday weekend has claimed more lives on our roads than any other.
