There's a call for homes and businesses in Dublin to donate any unneeded or disused laptops for students who need them during the coronavirus crisis.

A new programme is looking to ensure students with no access to technology at home can continue learning during the current pandemic.

Tech2Students - organised by Camara Education Ireland and TCD's Trinity Access programmes - will prioritise supplying any Leaving Certificate students who need laptops.

Any donated computers will be mainly distributed to the capital's DEIS schools.

Volunteers from ESB, meanwhile, will provide logistical support to collect laptops from homes or businesses across the city.

All donated laptops will be disinfected and have all data wiped from their hard-drives by engineers before they are passed on to students.

The students, meanwhile, will receive laptops that have been restored to factory settings and that have a fresh copy of Windows installed.

Dr Cliona Hannon, director of Trinity Access, said: “Students are doing their best to continue with their education through this difficult time and those without access to a laptop are at a particular disadvantage.

"We believe students and teachers in our partner schools are willing to take on the challenges of remote teaching and learning but they urgently need the right hardware now.

"This can either be old devices we can repurpose or contributions to enable us to buy laptops.”

All details of the project can be found on the Trinity Access website.
