Burkina Faso's army says it will back presidential guard Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida as the leader of a transitional government.

The former president - Blaise Compaore - fled the capital with his family last night, and arrived in the Ivory Coast earlier.

Since his resignation, two rival army chiefs have been claiming power in the West African country.
