One expert says men wearing skirts is 'the last taboo of masculinity'.

The debate has been sparked after US actor Brad Pitt wore a knee-length skirt to the Berlin premiere of his new film earlier this week.

Dr Ashley Morgan is a senior lecturer in the School of Art and Design at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

She told The Anton Savage Show men's clothes seem to be the final hurdle.

"It seems to me like the last taboo of masculinity - which is there are quite a few things in terms of colour and cut and type of clothes that men are discouraged to wear.

"There's a lot of social pressure on men to look a certain way... we don't really hear that very often.

"We hear that in relation to women - but men in skirts is quite a fairly recent phenomenon.

"I think we're becoming much more used to seeing rock stars and actors change up the way they look."

Dr Morgan says she was really pleased to see Brad Pitt wear what he wore.

"He's not just wearing a skirt, he's actually wearing a suit: it's a skirt-suit.

"It's not a kilt, it's a suit - it's got raw edges, it's a bit unfinished.

"And I thought it was very much a reflection of his masculinity, which appears to be less - perhaps - traditional in the way that we might think it is".

And she believes criticisms that this means men have become 'feminised' are untrue.

"The problem of being highly-feminised is that it appears as if masculinity is losing its power in a certain way.

"It's not - and it's very rare that that happens, it's very rare that masculinity doesn't convey power".
