A boy (12) remains in hospital after being knocked down in an apparent hit-and-run in Co Cork last night.

The incident happened on Thomas Davis Street in Blackpool, Cork city at about 9.50 last night while the young boy was crossing the road.

He was rushed by family members in their car to the Mercy University Hospital where he is said to be in a comfortable condition.

The car, which is believed to be a BMW, was carrying a number of passengers and failed to stop, instead continuing on in the direction of the city centre after the incident. A wing mirror belonging to a BMW was found at the scene.

Gardaí say this could prove crucial in tracking down the driver, and they are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The boy, who is from the Roma community, is said to be in a comfortable condition.

The road was closed for a period to allow for a Garda forensic crash investigator to examine the scene.

CCTV footage from Thomas Davis St cameras is being examined, as well as footage from the Watercourse Road and other areas gardaí believe the car may have travelled through.
