Gardai in Offaly are investigating a serious road traffic collision on the Tullamore to Rahan Road in which a boy (10) was killed.

It happened at around 9:15am this morning at Ballykilmurray, two miles outside Tullamore. Gardai say the boy was hit by a car.

The boy was seriously injured and was taken by ambulance to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore - but has since died.

It is believed he was a pupil of Ballinamere National School. The National Educational Psychological Service has been informed and is en-route to counsel students and staff.

The road has been closed for a Forensic Collision examination and diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have been on the road between 9am and 9:20am today to contact the gardai in Tullamore on 057-9327600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any garda station.
