The Taoiseach Enda Kenny says flags will fly at half mast on all Government buildings as a mark of respect for the victims of the Carrickmines fire tragedy.

Across the country, prayers, masses and books of condolence are being dedicated to the 10 people who died in the fire in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A minute's silence will also be observed before today's Euro qualifier between the Republic of Ireland and Poland.

All those who perished in the blaze at a halting site on the Glenamuck Road in Carrickmines were members of two extended families.

Two babies are among the dead.

Two adults are being treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.

Books of condolence are open in the locality today and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is opening one tomorrow.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious, but the cause has not been identified.

It is understood the fire broke out in a prefab shortly after 4:30am yesterday morning, and spread quickly to other units.

Fr Derek Farrell, parish priest for the travelling community, said local people are rallying around the bereaved in their time of "unbelievable loss":

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council will open books of condolence tomorrow.

However a number of shops have facilities today for people to offer their condolences in the area.

The books are in place in Leopardstown Shopping Centre, Centra Stepaside, The Market Belarmine and at Customer Services in Dundrum Shopping Centre.

Meanwhile the tragic deaths in Carrickmines have prompted calls for an urgent review of safety standards at halting sites across the country.

The national budget for traveller accommodation has been slashed from €70m in 2007 to €4.1m last year.

Severe overcrowding and lack of basic services such as water and electricity have been highlighted as major problems for traveller families.

People Before Profit Councillor Bríd Smith says that while we are still awaiting details of the cause of yesterday's tragedy, she believes it was an accident waiting to happen:
